This indicator shows the number of first-time asylum applicants and positive first-instance decisions per million inhabitants. A first-time applicant for international protection is a person who has lodged an asylum application for the first time. First-instance decisions are decisions granted by the respective authority acting as a first instance of the administrative or judicial asylum procedure in the receiving country. Caution is required when comparing these two values, since applications received in a given year might not be processed until a later year. UNHCR works with BiH authorities and civil society to improve the early identification of those with protection needs and to strengthen asylum procedures. The operational footprint of UNHCR in BiH is shifting focus on core mandate activities related to asylum, inclusion and statelessness, and expanding advocacy efforts. Together with authorities and NGO partners, UNHCR works to resolve all known cases of statelessness and to prevent new cases from arising. |

As a data collection methodology, a total of 34 tables were defined in the Decision for the institutions and organizations responsible for the implementation of the BiH Law on Aliens and the BiH Law on Asylum. The tables include the data on countries of citizenship, birth, gender and age structures, as well as the other parameters relevant for procedures and decisions relating to the movement and stay of aliens and asylum in Bosnia and Herzegovina for 2023. Upon receipt of the tables filled in by the relevant institutions, organizations and agencies, a quantitative and qualitative analysis of submitted data were conducted. Annual reports of other institutions and organizations were also consulted as an additional source of qualitative information required for interpretation of migration statistics and trends. |

The Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived (FEAD) supports asylum seekers by providing them with immediate relief (food, clothing and other essential items for personal use). The proposed European Solidarity Corps will enable young people across the EU to volunteer their help for the reception and integration of refugees. |
