| Coverage and comparability |
Data for Bosnia and Herzegovina are presented in accordance with the methodological concept of the EU indicator and Eurostat data. The available series presented on the portal covers 2022–2024, with values of 0.8%, 1.0% and 1.1%, respectively. For earlier years for which Eurostat reports the data for Bosnia and Herzegovina as “Not available”, the data are not treated as zero values and are not included in the displayed time series. Automatic progress calculation is based on the available time series from 2022 onwards. All available values are positive, and an increase in the recycling rate represents a favourable direction of change. Therefore, progress is calculated in the positive direction, in accordance with the Open SDG methodological framework. |
| National context and objectives |
For Bosnia and Herzegovina, the EU target of at least 60% recycling and preparation for re-use of municipal waste by 2030 does not constitute an established national quantitative target. This value is used as an EU reference framework for monitoring and contextualising developments in the indicator. The indicator is used to monitor developments in the municipal waste recycling rate in Bosnia and Herzegovina in accordance with the methodological framework of the EU Sustainable Development Goal indicators. |

The indicator monitors progress in sustainable municipal waste management, more efficient resource use and the transition towards a circular economy. A higher recycling rate indicates a greater share of municipal waste directed towards recycling or preparation for re-use. |

The indicator is calculated as the amount of municipal waste recycled or prepared for re-use divided by the total amount of municipal waste generated. Data are collected annually and refer to the calendar year. The methodological concept is based on Eurostat statistics on municipal waste. |
| EU context and objectives |
At EU level, a target has been established to increase the preparing for re-use and recycling of municipal waste to a minimum of 60% by 2030. This value represents the EU reference framework for monitoring progress in municipal waste recycling. |
