Indicator description

The indicator shows forest area as a share of the total area of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The data are obtained from the forestry statistics of the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BHAS). The series covers forest area and excludes other wooded land.
Data source and methodology

The indicator provides information on the share of forest area and changes in that share over time. It is important for monitoring forest resources, conserving forest ecosystems and promoting sustainable forest management.
Coverage and comparability

According to the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina, forest area accounted for 31.0% in the period 2020–2023 and 30.6% in 2024. This represents a decrease of 0.4 percentage points compared with the 2020–2023 period. The series covers forest area only and excludes other wooded land.
National context and objectives

No specific quantitative target for the share of forest area has been established at the level of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Long-term priorities concern the conservation of forest resources, the protection of forest ecosystems and sustainable forest management in line with relevant strategic documents.
Indicator description

The indicator measures forest area as a share of the total area of a country. The data used for this indicator come from the European Forest Accounts (EFA) and are consistent with the FAO definition of forests.
Data source and methodology

The indicator is used to monitor progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 15, which concerns the protection, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. The share of forest area is an important measure of forest resources and changes in land use.
Coverage and comparability

Sustainable Development Goal 15 aims to protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss. The indicator corresponds to global Sustainable Development Goal indicator 15.1.1, which measures forest area as a proportion of total land area.
EU context and objectives

The European Commission’s Forest Strategy for 2030 includes a commitment to plant at least three billion additional trees in the European Union, while conserving and restoring forest ecosystems and improving sustainable forest management.
