Indicator 2.10 Obesity rate by body mass index (BMI)

The European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) aims to measure the health status (including disability), health determinants (lifestyle) of EU citizens, the use of health services, and barriers to accessing those services, in a harmonized manner and with a high degree of comparability among Member States (MS). The general scope of the survey covers the population aged over 15 years living in private households within the territory of the country. EHIS consists of four modules: health status, health determinants, health care, and core variables (sociodemographic characteristics of the population).

Data are collected through national surveys. EHIS can be conducted as a separate national survey or can be integrated into an existing national survey (e.g., national health survey, labor force survey, other household survey). In this way, member countries had maximum flexibility in implementation. However, across the EU the same data were collected according to a common list of variables and response categories.

EHIS aims to achieve standardization of data entry. A standard questionnaire model (questions, response categories, filters, etc.) has been prepared, as well as conceptual guidelines and explanations. A conceptual translation into all EU languages has been requested.
