| Description |
This indicator measures the total antimicrobial consumption (AMC) in the community and hospital sectors. AMC is expressed as the number of defined daily doses (DDD) per 1 000 inhabitants per day. The data refer to the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) classification code J01 ‘Antibacterials for systemic use’. The data for the EU aggregate are presented as population-weighted mean and include imputations and adjustments. |
|---|---|
| Rationale |
Indicator is used to monitor progress towards SDG 3 on good health and well-being, which are embedded in the European Commission’s 2024-2029 Priorities under ‘Supporting people, strenghtening our societes and our social model’. |
| Content and progress |
Main prerequisite for meeting these objectives are universal health coverage; access to sexual and reproductive health-care services and to safe, affordable and effective medicines and vaccines for all. Standardised death rates that are used for this indicator take into account that countries with larger shares of older inhabitants also have higher death rates. The indicator is similar to the global SDG indicator 3.d.2 “Percentage of bloodstream infections due to selected antimicrobial-resistant organisms”. |
| Long-term objective |
Reduce the total consumption of antibiotics in humans by 20% by 2030 compared with 2019. |
