Indicator 2.30 Government support to agricultural research and development

The indicator measures government budget allocations for research and development (GBARD) directed towards agriculture in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These data show the amount of planned public budget funding for agricultural research and development and provide insight into the priority given to this area. Investment in research and development can contribute to improving agricultural productivity, developing sustainable and resilient food production systems, and strengthening food security. Values are expressed in million euro at current prices.

The data source for Bosnia and Herzegovina is the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BHAS). The data are published within the European Statistical System framework for government budget allocations for research and development (ESS GBARD) and the Eurostat dataset sdg_02_30. They refer to budget allocations for research and development classified under the socio-economic objective of agriculture and are expressed in million euro at current prices. Progress is calculated automatically in Open SDG using the compound annual growth rate (CAGR), with 2019 as the base year and 2030 as the default target year. The desired direction is an increase in allocations. The value rose from EUR 0.258 million in 2019 to EUR 3.045 million in 2024, corresponding to an average annual growth rate of approximately 63.8%. According to the automatic calculation, this trend indicates significant progress. However, these are nominal values at current prices, and the growth rate is strongly influenced by the low starting value. The progress status describes the trend in allocations over the period observed and does not represent an assessment against a specific national quantitative target.

The time series covers Bosnia and Herzegovina for the period from 2015 to 2024. Values for 2015–2018 are reported as EUR 0.00 million, while positive values are recorded from 2019 onwards. The data refer to budget allocations for research and development in agriculture and are expressed in million euro at current prices. Comparability between countries may be affected by the stage of the budgetary process from which the data are drawn, namely whether they refer to final budget appropriations or actual outlays, as well as by the treatment of VAT and European Union funds for research and development. Nominal values do not account for changes in price levels.

Public investment in agricultural research and development can contribute to modernising agricultural production, improving productivity, fostering innovation, and strengthening the sustainability and resilience of food production systems.
