Indicator description

The indicator measures the number of road traffic fatalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including road users who died as drivers, passengers and pedestrians. The indicator is expressed as the total number of road traffic deaths.
Data source and methodology

The indicator is used to monitor road safety and progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 11, which aims to make human settlements safe, resilient and sustainable, and Sustainable Development Goal 3, which aims to ensure health and well-being.
Coverage and comparability

Data on road traffic accidents and fatalities are collected and processed by the competent police authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Srpska and the Police of Brčko District. At state level, the data are submitted to the Ministry of Communications and Transport of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has a coordinating role in the field of road safety. The data are subsequently used within the Western Balkans Road Safety Observatory (WBRSO), operated by the Transport Community. The data for Bosnia and Herzegovina presented on the BHAS EU SDG portal are taken from the Transport Community/WBRSO data series. The reference period is the calendar year, and the data are presented as the total number of road traffic deaths. For the calculation of progress on the BHAS EU SDG portal, the available time series for Bosnia and Herzegovina is used. The direction of progress is negative, meaning that a reduction in the number of road traffic deaths represents improvement.
National context and objectives

For progress assessment on the BHAS EU SDG portal, the direction of change of the indicator is used, with a reduction in the number of road traffic deaths representing improvement. The EU road safety policy target of reducing road deaths by 50% by 2030 compared with 2019 is used as a European reference framework and is not treated as a specific national target of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Indicator description

The indicator measures the number of fatalities caused by road accidents, including drivers and passengers of motorised vehicles and pedal cycles, as well as pedestrians. Persons dying in road accidents up to 30 days after the occurrence of the accident are counted as road accident fatalities. The indicator can be expressed as the total number of road traffic deaths and as the number of road traffic deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
Data source and methodology

The indicator is used to monitor progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 11, which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, and Sustainable Development Goal 3, which aims to ensure health and well-being for all at all ages. The indicator can be considered similar to global SDG indicator 3.6.1, “Death rate due to road traffic injuries”.

The data are based on data from the European Commission – Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE), from the CARE database, based on data reported by countries. The reference period is the calendar year and the indicator is disseminated annually. For the purposes of the indicator, persons dying in road accidents up to 30 days after the occurrence of the accident are counted as road accident fatalities. Data may be expressed as the number of road traffic deaths and as the number of road traffic deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
EU context and objectives

The Strategic Action Plan on Road Safety and the EU road safety policy framework 2021–2030 set a target of reducing deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2030 compared with 2019. The EU’s long-term vision is to achieve zero road deaths by 2050 (“Vision Zero”).
